The money playbook 📖
Five things families usually learn too late. Honest, boring, and worth lakhs.
Start 12–18 months out
Flagship deadlines close roughly a year before the course starts. Rhodes for 2027 shuts in July 2026; Chevening in early November. If you discover a scholarship the same year you want to enrol, you've usually already missed it.
→ Work backwards from your intake month and calendar every deadline today.
Aid ≠ loan — read the letter
"Scholarship" in a brochure sometimes means a loan with better branding. Grants and need-based aid are money you keep; loans are money you repay with interest. The award letter will say which — the ad won't.
→ Ask in writing: is this a grant, a fee waiver, or a repayable loan?
PG hack: assistantships
US and EU grad schools fund most students through TA/RA roles — a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend. These come from professors and departments, not scholarship portals, and they're negotiated after (or alongside) your admit.
→ Cold-email professors with a specific research pitch, not a generic CV blast.
Do the loan margin math
Indian education loans typically fund 85–100% of cost; the gap (the "margin") is on your family. Above roughly ₹7.5L, expect collateral conversations. Moratorium terms — when interest starts biting — matter more than the headline rate.
→ Model total repayment over 10 years, not just the interest percentage.
Mine the boring portals
NSP (scholarships.gov.in), your state's merit portal, and private trusts like Inlaks, KC Mahindra and Aditya Birla are unglamorous — which is exactly why they're under-applied. Smaller cheques, far better odds.
→ Stack 3–4 smaller awards instead of betting everything on one famous one.
